Your introduction to Sclerotherapy

Glen Eden Medical | Grantham

Thread veins are unsightly veins on the legs. They are blood vessels that have become enlarged and can be due to a variety of different factors. The natural ageing process, too much exposure to the sun over the years, changes in our hormonal levels, and simple genetics are all causes of thread veins.

Not only do they look unattractive and are particularly undesirable in the summer, when our legs are often more exposed, but they may also be uncomfortable. It’s not unusual for thread veins to throb, ache, or be painful. An effective treatment to reduce their prominence is Sclerotherapy.

What is Sclerotherapy

This effective treatment for the removal of thread veins is available from our Stamford and Oakham clinic. It involves an injection into the vein itself that causes a blockage in the flow of the blood. A sclerosing liquid is used for its ability to irritate the lining of the vein walls. When blood can no longer flow through a vein, the vein will be broken down by the body and removed.

Whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for sclerotherapy treatment and just how effective the results will be for you individually, will depend on the position and severity of the vein. Particular health conditions, medicines you are taking, being pregnant, or an allergy to the sclerosing liquid we use, may mean that sclerotherapy is not the best option for you. However, should that prove to be the case, then there may be an alternative treatment method that can provide you with similar results here at our sclerotherapy practice here in Stamford and Oakham.

Immediately following your treatment, you are likely to experience some swelling and bruising around the injection site. You will be advised to keep your legs raised as often as possible and for as long as possible in the 24 hours afterwards. Compression garments may be recommended to you to reduce the swelling, especially if the vein treated was a large one. Once the vein is no longer visible, you shouldn’t expect it to reappear. This treatment is permanent. Your body will have removed the affected vein forever.
